I find myself singing so many of the old choruses lately..probably showing my age but to me they are timeless! I’ve been memorising the beatitudes with my children over the last week and it’s really impacted me so I thought I’d share my gleanings. So much of what the world tells us is the way to be blessed is contrary to what Jesus taught.
No.1:”Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”. As I pondered what being poor in spirit meant it dawned on me that it is not in thinking we are good or holy or worthy that makes us blessed. It is the opposite. To be poor in spirit is to recognise our complete unworthiness, sinful state before a holy God. It is then we fall to our knees in complete thankfulness to the One who has brought us reconciliation with God-Jesus Christ! As the chorus of this song so triumphantly echoes
“And now let the weak say I am strong
Let the poor say I am rich
Because of what the Lord has done for us”
May we be under no illusions. It is not by any works of righteousness we can inherit the kingdom of heaven. It is only through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Lord forgive every wicked and evil intent of our hearts.
I hope this could bless you, please share your thoughts 😊
